There are many costume and textile related interest groups in the UK covering all aspects of textile and costume history and techniques. The contact details listed below are mainly for the head offices of groups which can provide contact details of smaller local or regional groups and meetings. Public libraries have lists of groups in their local area and most council websites also have details of relevant groups in their ‘What’s on' section.
Costume and Textile Study Groups
The Costume Society of Scotland e-mail: cossocscotland@hotmail.com Organisation which promotes interest in all aspects of costume and textiles. Holds exhibitions and study days and offers advice to members and organisations.
The Costume Society of Great Britain www.costumesociety.org.uk Society which encourages the study of costume history including contemporary dress. The group produces an annual publication, Costume, which includes research articles on all aspects of costume and textiles, and holds events and study days. Nine regional costume societies across UK.
The Oriental Rug and Textile Group in Scotland The Royal Museum of Scotland Edinburgh EH1 1JF Group meets monthly from October to March for lectures from experts in this field. Meetings are held at Edinburgh College of Art, Lauriston Place, Edinburgh
The Textile Society www.textilesociety.org.uk Society which encourages the study of textile design and history. Produces annual journal, Text, and three newsletters yearly.
The Medieval Dress and Textile Society www.medats.org.uk Formed in 1991 to encourage the study and conservation of medieval dress and textiles. Produces newsletters and holds meetings and conferences.
European Textile Network www.etn-net.org Organises textile trails to visit and study textile collections around Europe and produces textile publications including Textile Forum magazine.

The Guild of Silk Painters e-mail: enquiries@silkpainters-guild.co.uk www.silkpainters-guild.co.uk Interest group for silk painters which organises silk painting events and classes. Produces four magazines yearly.
The Batik Guild www.batikguild.org.uk Formed in 1986 the Guild has c200 members and organises batik workshops and talks and produces three newsletters per year.

Promotes embroidery by holding workshops, events and tours. Guild has registered collection of over 11,000 embroideries. Local branches across the UK including 328 in Scotland.

Encourages high standard of lacemaking design and development. Registered museum with large collection of lace from all over the world. Administers lace assessment scheme.

Provides advisory and support services to craftspeople and information to the public about all aspects of crafts.
The Association of Guilds of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers www.wsd.org.uk Aims to preserve and improve the craftsmanship in handweaving, spinning and dyeing and organises educational events relating to these crafts. Membership association open to any weaving, spinning or dyeing guild in the UK which subscribes to the aims of the Guild. Produces quarterly magazine and organises courses and events. Four guilds in Scotland affiliated to the Guild.
Dress and Textile Specialists Organisation mainly for Museum staff responsible for costume and textile collections but other interested parties are welcome. Group holds annual two day conference with presentations and discussion. Three newsletters yearly and occasional visits organised to museums and collections.
